mar 15, 2019 | Expofood expects to bring another 45,000 to Riocentro

From March 19 to 21, Rio de Janeiro will host the 31st Super Rio Expofood. The fair, which brings together professionals and companies from the supermarket, baking, hotel, convenience, bars, and restaurants sectors, is expected to bring over 45,000 people to Riocentro, in the Western Zone. It's not just the number of visitors that impresses. For three days, 500 companies promise to expose novelties that will be available in 200 of the largest supermarkets in the country in the coming months.
 

mar 13, 2019 | Rio 2019 Carnival breaks public and income records

The 2019 carnival broke records in Rio de Janeiro. Officially closed last Sunday (03/10), with the last street parades, the revelry livened up locals and tourists and generated R$ 3.78 billion in revenue, 26% more than last year. The amount, released by Riotur, the city's tourism entity, exceeded the National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism's initial forecast of R$ 2.1 billion in revenue.

The line-up of the biggest entertainment festival in the world has its headliners set. The 2019 edition of Rock In Rio will receive acts for all tastes on the main stage City of Rock, in the Olympic Park, in Barra da Tijuca. The first day, September 27th, will feature Drake, who will be landing in the country for the first time. The Foo Fighters close the second night (28th), followed by Bon Jovi on the third night. Red Hot Chili Peppers (October 3), Iron Maiden (4), P!nk (5) and Muse and Imagine Dragons (6) are also confirmed.

Robots of different types and sizes land in Rio de Janeiro for the country’s largest robotics competition: the Sesi Robotics Festival. The event is free for visitors and takes place from March15th to 17th at Pier Mauá. The attention is all for those behind the building and programming of robots: more than 1,200 students from public and private schools who put to practice what they learn in Science, Mathematics, Physics and other technology-related subjects. Separated in categories, students face three challenges: The First Lego League, the First Tech Challenge and F1 in Schools.

According to the official Brazilian calendar, Carnival starts today (March 1st) in the whole country. Another summer night in Rio de Janeiro. It is Saturday and, a few days before the Carnival, the dance halls of the samba schools are boiling up. Members, locals and tourists get into the groove, try to do the Samba and sing, at the top of their lungs, the Sambas that will accompany the thousands of people in the Sambadrome. It is 10PM when we enter Rua Silva Teles street, in the Andaraí neighborhood, in the North side of town. It is the address of one of the most traditional samba schools in Rio de Janeiro: Salgueiro. This school, which has conquered the Samba Schools Competition nine times, usually makes memorable outings and gathers 4 thousand people per night.

It is not only the temperatures exceeding 40°C that leave Rio de Janeiro boiling in February. From day 1, the city lives the pre-Carnival atmosphere. The first weekend of February featured only two street parades, but in the next few days, 174 street parades will dust themselves off and bring joy to the Cariocas. The party happens in all areas of the city and the peak of the pre-Carnival period is the weekend from February 22nd to 24th, with 115 of these street parades.

The number of events held in Rio de Janeiro in 2018 has risen compared to last year. In all, 275 fairs, congresses or conventions were held in the city last year, being 183 national events, 58 international events and 34 local events. According to the Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau, a promotions agency linked to the tourism sector, 35% were focused on the medical area, and 12%, on the business area. Another 1.2 million people passed through Rio for these events.

It's time to buy a ticket and travel to Rio de Janeiro. In precisely 28 days the city will be invaded by the contagious joy of Carnival. It is true that the blocks and samba schools’ rehearsals are already warming the tambourines and attracting thousands of local revelers to the streets and samba schools’ compounds. The party starts officially on Friday, March 1st, and lasts until Wednesday morning, on the 6th. However, on the weekends that precede the event, as well as on the 9th and 10th, there will also be parades of blocks and samba schools. According to the official agencies, more than 7 million people - 1.5 million of whom being tourists - are expected to participate in the street parties and in the Sambadrome, place of the samba schools’ parade. The impact in the city's economy is estimated at R$ 3.5 billion.

The official tickets sale for Rock in Rio 2019, the biggest entertainment event in the world, has a date to start: April 11, starting at 7pm, at www.rockinrio.com. In the early sale of this edition, which happened in November last year, 198,000 cards were sold in less than two hours. This year, Rock in Rio will take place on September 27, 28 and 29, and on October 03, 04, 05 and 06, at the Rock City, in the Olympic Park, at Barra da Tijuca.
 

jan 14, 2019 | Japanese culture takes over the summer in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro will be taken over by Japanese culture. From the 25th to the 27th, Riocentro, in the city’s West Side, will host the second edition of River Matsuri. The festival allows locals and tourists to immerse in the Japanese universe without traveling to the East. The idea is to transform the space into a little piece of Japan, with gastronomic experiences, cultural exhibitions, folklore dances, sporting and artistic presentations, among other attractions. jan 11, 2019 | Rio sets record for tourists at New Year’s Eve

For the first time in history, the New Year’s Eve celebration held at Copacabana Beach, in the Southern Zone of Rio de Janeiro, had more tourists than residents in the metropolitan area. The celebration - over 10 hours of concerts and 14 minutes of a firework display, gathered 2.8 million people, with 1.4 million tourists. The data are part of a survey conducted by Riotur - a company linked to the city hall, responsible for promoting tourism - on the night of December 31. Of the total number of visitors, 155,000 were foreigners and 1,245 from other parts of Brazil.

Cariocas and tourists who choose to celebrate the arrival of 2019 at the biggest outdoor party in the world will see an unprecedented spectacle. With more powerful artifacts, fireworks will be launched for 14 minutes and will be synchronized to a special soundtrack. In addition, the city of Rio promises the public more than ten hours of concerts.

Starts today (28th), in Rio de Janeiro, the 58th Providence Fair (Feira da Providência). The event that promotes cultural diversity, themed “Peace on Earth”, should gather around 100,000 people at Riocentro, in the city’s West Zone. In the 2017 edition, the cards were sold out in two hours.

sep 15, 2018 | World’s largest game park gathers 95,000 people in Rio de Janeiro

Game XP 2018 – the event that was born in Rock in Rio 2017 and this year started standing on its own feet - gathered 95,000 people during the 4-day event in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A survey conducted by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) revealed that the world’s first game park generated an economic impact of R$ 53.9 million for Brazil. According to FGV, of the amount raised, R$ 36.7 million are from direct impact (lodging, food and transportation), while the remaining R$ 17.2 million refer to indirect effect. The methodology developed by the institution considers the cascade effect that the public expenses of Game XP have on the local economy.

This year, the congress, the exhibition and the side events should attract more than 40,000 people to the fair, a 20% increase according to the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (IBP).
